This week, I spoke at a large Australian youth conference called Soul Survivor. It was an honour to see so many young hearts eager to follow Jesus and make a difference in their world. The music at the conference was electrifying! There was so much joy in the air. I was especially moved by the drummer, a third-year Jazz student at the Sydney Conservatorium. Each beat seemed like a prayer, a way of worshiping God through music. Reflecting on the past, I thought about how drums were once considered irreverent and disrespectful in churches. Just 50 years ago, their introduction caused controversy and drove some individuals away. But at Soul Survivor, I witnessed the power of God shining through the drum kit. Young people clapped along, full of enthusiasm. It reminded me that the church must evolve to reach each new generation. Change can be scary, but just as the drum kit was embraced years ago, we must continue to find new ways to connect with hearts and glorify God.
“Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King.Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with drum and harp.” - Psalm 149
